The interaction between level design and gameplay, as you have to sneak across cliffs or through foliage only increases my appreciation of it all - that beautiful mountain? Scale it to kill the pesky guard. The set designs are varied and all well done. Being able to swing the camera around easily to get the best view possible is something I've caught myself trying and failing to do in other games. The camera controls in this game are some of my favorite - they may be basic to this genre but they were a revelation to me. The graphics and the game itself are all beautiful. It often felt like character-driven puzzles, with a healthy balance of methodically planning out your next steps while having to recover from 'oh shit' moments constantly. I find myself typically jumping between narrative RPGs and strategy focused games, and the balance here was PERFECT. There are many ways to get through many levels - you can choose to cut down the enemy or sneak through, typically multiple ways for each. The characters and their abilities interact with enemies and the environment to slowly and methodically work through levels. I'll start with the gameplay - you can control one or more stealthy characters with various abilities in order to accomplish missions (while heavily outnumbered) in the Edo period of Japan. Shadow Tactics hit many notes incredibly well, and has become a favorite game of the year for me, as well as introducing me to a new favorite, though narrow, genre. I've not played any stealth games previously, either in this RTS/tactics vein, or in a Hitman/AC-type either. I'm a longtime lurker, but have been planning to write this post for a while.
